About this area
Sanibel & Captiva
Sanibel and Captiva are barrier islands reached only by the Sanibel Causeway, with a residential base that is older, year-round in part and seasonal in part. Island participants plan study visits around causeway traffic and toll crossings.
Getting to our office
Take Periwinkle Way to Causeway Boulevard and cross the Sanibel Causeway (toll) to Summerlin Road, then follow Cape Coral Parkway west across the Cape Coral Bridge and turn north on Chiquita Boulevard S.
Local information
- Route markers: the Sanibel Lighthouse, Periwinkle Way shops, the J.N. Ding Darling refuge entrance and the causeway islands.
- Island referrals are dominated by adults over 65: cardiovascular studies, COPD, osteoarthritis and sleep-related conditions.
- Allow about 45 minutes to an hour including the toll plaza; causeway traffic is heaviest late morning in season.
- We batch Sanibel and Captiva visits so one causeway crossing covers labs and physician time, and remote follow-up calls replace short in-person checks whenever the protocol allows.
